Planning

Planning is where you set up and manage everything involved in fulfilling a manufacturing order — from the order itself, through its bill of materials, to the work orders and routing steps that get it produced on the shop floor.

How it works

A typical flow through Planning looks like this:

  1. Define what a product is made of using a Bill of Materials (BOM).
  2. Optionally define a reusable MO Template for a product family, and a Workflow Template describing the sequence of operations it goes through.
  3. Create a Manufacturing Order (MO) for the customer/production request, listing one or more items (SKUs and quantities).
  4. Break each MO item down into one or more Work Orders — the actual units of work scheduled onto a line or machine.
  5. Track progress on each Work Order as it moves through its routing steps, and use Job Cards to record shop-floor checks and sign-offs along the way.

Key concepts

Concept Description
Manufacturing Order (MO) A production request — one or more items (SKU + quantity), with a customer, priority, and dates
MO Template A reusable MO type, optionally linking a spec form and a default routing
Bill of Materials (BOM) The components (raw SKUs or sub-assembly BOMs) that make up one SKU, at a given version
Work Order A concrete unit of production work for one MO item, scheduled and tracked through to completion
Work Order Template A reusable Work Order type with a default routing
Workflow Template A named, ordered sequence of steps (a routing) that a Work Order moves through
Job Card A shop-floor checklist attached to a Work Order, used to record checks, measurements, or sign-offs for a specific step
