Adding Modbus Parameters

A Modbus parameter maps a single register on a Modbus device to a trackable data point in Enture. Once added, the platform polls the register continuously and makes the value available for dashboards, reports, alerts, and real-time views.

Before you begin

  • The Modbus Device must already exist.
  • You need the register map for the device — its function code, register address, data type, and byte order. This normally comes from the device manufacturer's Modbus register documentation.

Steps

1. Open the Modbus Device

In the left sidebar, go to Digital Twin → Devices and open the device you want to add a parameter to.

2. Add a parameter

Click Add Parameter. You can add a single parameter, multiple parameters at once, or a write-capable parameter block.

3. Fill in the parameter details

Field Description
Name A descriptive name for this data point (e.g. Active Power, Motor Speed)
Address The register address to read, as defined in the device's Modbus register map
Command The Modbus function code used to read this register (e.g. Read Holding Registers, Read Input Registers, Read Coils, Read Discrete Inputs)
Data Type The data type of the register value
Value Type How the raw register bytes should be interpreted (e.g. integer, float)
Register Size The number of registers this value spans (e.g. a single 16-bit register, or two registers for a 32-bit value)
Byte Format The byte/word order used to reconstruct multi-register values, matching the device's documented byte order
Offset An address offset applied when reading the register, if required by the device
Unit The engineering unit (e.g. kW, °C, rpm). Optional.
Data Processing Average (mean of samples over the period) or Difference (change over the period, useful for counters)

4. Common settings

Correction Factor, Addition Constant, Idle Latency, Entropy, and the related checkboxes (Enable Entropy, Limit Entropy, Remove Negative Entropy, No Zero Read, Remove Decimal, Restrict User Access, Calculate Consumption, Disabled) work the same way as on every other protocol — see Common Parameter Settings for details.

5. Save

Click Create. The parameter is added to the device.

What happens next

The edge device receives the updated parameter list within approximately 30 seconds and begins polling the register.

Viewing live data

  1. Navigate to Digital Twin → Devices → open the device.
  2. Click on the parameter name.
  3. The parameter detail page shows the current value and a real-time chart.

Tip

If you do not see data arriving after a few minutes, verify that:

  • The register address, function code, and byte format match the device's documentation exactly.
  • The gateway (for TCP devices) or serial connection (for RTU devices) is reachable from the edge device.
  • The Slave ID on the device matches the physical device's configured address.
