Adding S7 Parameters

An S7 parameter maps a single memory location on a Siemens PLC to a trackable data point in Enture. Once added, the platform reads the location continuously and makes the value available for dashboards, reports, alerts, and real-time views.

Before you begin

  • The S7 Device must already exist.
  • You need the Data Block (DB) number, byte offset, and value type for the memory location — this normally comes from the PLC program or your PLC programmer.

Steps

1. Open the S7 Device

In the left sidebar, go to Digital Twin → Devices and open the device you want to add a parameter to.

2. Add a parameter

Click Add Parameter.

3. Fill in the parameter details

Field Description
Name A descriptive name for this data point (e.g. Spindle Speed, Part Count)
DB Number The Data Block number where the value is stored
Byte Offset The byte offset within the Data Block where the value starts
Value Type The data type of the value: Bool, Integer, Real, Dint, Lint, or String
Bit Offset (Shown only when Value Type is Bool) Which bit within the byte holds this value (0–7)
Data Length The length of the value in bytes (relevant for String and multi-byte types)
Unit The engineering unit (e.g. rpm, °C). Optional.
Data Processing Average (mean of samples over the period), Difference, or Negative Difference
Description Notes about this parameter

4. Common settings

Correction Factor, Idle Latency, Entropy, and the related checkboxes (Enable Entropy, Limit Entropy, Remove Negative Entropy, No Zero Read, Remove Decimal, Restrict User Access, Calculate Consumption, Disabled) work the same way as on every other protocol — see Common Parameter Settings for details.

5. Save

Click Create. The parameter is added to the device.

Adding multiple parameters via CSV

If you need to add many memory locations at once, you can upload them as a CSV instead of adding each one individually.

  1. Click Add Parameter, then switch to the CSV Upload tab (next to Single Param).
  2. Set the Batch Defaults — the Idle Latency and checkbox settings that will apply to every row in your file, unless the row specifies its own Latency.
  3. Click Download Template to get a CSV file with the correct columns and two example rows (one regular value, one Bool).
  4. Fill in the template with your parameters, one row per value. Expand Column Reference on the page for the list of accepted values for Value Type, Latency, and Data Processing. Bit Offset is only needed for rows where Value Type is Bool.
  5. Drag and drop the completed file onto the page, or click to browse for it.
  6. Review the preview table. Any row with a problem — a missing value, an unrecognised option, or a DB Number/Byte Offset/Bit Offset combination that's already used elsewhere in the file or already exists on this device — is flagged in red with the reason. Fix the file and re-upload until every row is clear.
  7. Click Upload N rows. Each row is created and its status updates live (Pending → Creating → Created, or Failed with the reason).
  8. If any rows failed, click Download failed rows to get a CSV containing only those rows, so you can correct and re-upload just the ones that didn't go through.

What happens next

The edge device receives the updated parameter list within approximately 30 seconds and begins reading the memory location.

Viewing live data

  1. Navigate to Digital Twin → Devices → open the device.
  2. Click on the parameter name.
  3. The parameter detail page shows the current value and a real-time chart.

Tip

If you do not see data arriving after a few minutes, verify that:

  • The DB number, byte offset, and value type match the PLC program exactly.
  • The PLC's IP address, rack, and slot are correct and reachable from the edge device.
  • The PLC firewall (if any) allows S7comm connections on port 102 from the edge device.
